Sleep Disorders in Children

March 22, 2026

Sleep problems in children include night waking, night terrors, sleepwalking, snoring, daytime sleepiness, and events during sleep that may resemble seizures. Sleep strongly affects growth, learning, and behavior. Correct diagnosis helps families avoid unnecessary worry while building a safe, restful sleep routine.

Sleep problems in childhood

Parasomnias such as night terrors, sleepwalking, and talking in sleep are usually benign and differ from seizures. Snoring and pauses in breathing may suggest sleep apnea. Excessive daytime sleepiness may rarely indicate conditions such as narcolepsy. Rhythmic jerking or prolonged stillness during sleep may raise concern for epileptic seizures. Sleep history, bed and wake times, screen use, and school performance are evaluated together.

When should you pay attention?

Repeated night waking most nights, marked daytime sleepiness, or falling school performance warrants evaluation. Bluish color change during sleep, loud snoring, or suspected breathing pauses may require urgent sleep assessment. Suspected seizures should be evaluated by pediatric neurology first. Recurrent sleepwalking calls for home safety planning.

  • Rhythmic jerking or prolonged stillness during sleep
  • Severe morning fatigue and falling asleep at school
  • Night terrors or frequent fearful awakenings
  • Snoring and suspected breathing pauses
  • Daytime sudden collapse resembling sleep attacks

When to see a neurologist and tips for families

If sleep problems affect daily life, ask for pediatric neurology or sleep specialist evaluation. Keep a two-week sleep diary with bed and wake times, night awakenings, and daytime tiredness. Consistent sleep schedules, a dark cool room, and limiting screens before bed help many children. During night terrors or sleepwalking, prioritize safety rather than trying to wake the child abruptly. When events may be seizures, video recording and EEG may be needed.
